How the typing test works

  1. Pick a test length: 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute or 2 minutes.
  2. Click the text and start typing. The clock starts on your first keystroke.
  3. Correct letters light up, mistakes turn red. Backspace to fix them.
  4. When time runs out you get your net WPM, raw WPM and accuracy.

Tips to type faster

  • Accuracy first. Every mistake costs a backspace and a correction. Slow down until you hit 95%, then build speed.
  • Use the home row. Rest your fingers on A S D F and J K L ; and reach out from there.
  • Don’t look down. Watching the keys breaks your rhythm. Trust your fingers, even if it feels slow at first.
  • Practice little and often. Ten minutes a day beats an hour once a week.

Frequently asked questions

How is WPM calculated?

Words per minute uses the standard definition of a “word” as five characters, spaces included. Your net WPM counts only correctly typed characters; raw WPM counts everything you typed. A 60-second test where you type 250 correct characters scores 50 WPM.

What is a good typing speed?

Most adults type around 35 to 45 WPM. 50 to 70 WPM is fast and comfortable for office work, and above 90 WPM is in the range of professional typists. Accuracy matters more than raw speed: aim for 95% or higher.

Can I fix mistakes?

Yes. Use Backspace to correct errors before you move on. Mistakes you leave in place lower your accuracy and your net WPM.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes, tap the text to bring up your keyboard. Scores on touch screens are usually lower than on a physical keyboard, so compare like with like.
