When to flip a coin
A coin toss is the fastest fair way to make a two-way choice: who kicks off, who picks the movie, which of two restaurants to try, or who does the dishes. Some people use it as a gut check — if you feel disappointed by the result, you know which option you really wanted.
It is also a simple way to see probability in action. Flip 100 coins a few times and watch how the split hovers around 50/50 without ever being exact.
Frequently asked questions
Is a virtual coin flip really 50/50?
Yes. Each flip uses your browser’s cryptographic random number generator, so heads and tails each have exactly a 50% chance. A real coin is very slightly biased toward the side facing up when it is tossed — this one is not.
Why did I get heads five times in a row?
Streaks are completely normal with random results. In 100 flips, a run of 5 or more of the same side happens most of the time. Each flip is independent: the coin has no memory of what came before.
Can I flip more than one coin at a time?
Yes. Use “Flip many coins” to flip anywhere from 2 to 100 coins at once and see how many landed heads and tails.
Is there a keyboard shortcut?
Press the space bar to flip the coin.
